Throughout southern Europe and northern Africa the Crag Martin is found in upland areas. The tell-tale white spots in the square tail are visible from quite a distance; this serves to exclude other swallows except in parts of Israel and North Africa where the similar Pale Crag Martin (or Rock Martin) occurs. Separating these two species in Morocco is difficult as the race of Crag Martin found there is quite pale (see photograph), and requires excellent views of the underparts (Pale Crag Martin has a pale vent and silvery flight feathers, compared to Crag Martin).
