There are very few places where it is possible to drive into the mysterious world of the Desert Sparrow (male above), as it lives exclusively in the remote sandy deserts of north Africa and central Asia. At Erg Chebbi in southeastern Morocco there are a few local cafes on the edge of a huge sand dune, where a few of these enigmatic birds come in each morning to search for seeds among the sparse grass shoots and camel droppings. Recently the number of House Sparrows at these cafes has been increasing, with possible negative implications for their scarce, little-known and delicately-plumaged relative.
